Air pollution in India is way above the safe limits, if it continues like this for few more years it will result into many premature deaths and huge economic lose due to sick population. Main cause of air pollution in India is: .

Fuel wood and biomass burning.

Municipal waste landfills.

Illegal use of RDF derived from municipal Solid waste.

Adultrated fuel and poor enforcement of polluting vehicles.

Traffic Congestion.

As documented by WHO, 15 Indian cities figure in worlds top 30 polluting cities by PM2.5, with top 4 cities being Delhi, Patna, Gwalior, Raipur followed by Karachi, Peshawar and Rawalpindi. Majority of the values are for 2011-12. Particulate matter or particulates have the ability to penetrate deep into the lungs and blood streams unfiltered, causing permanent DNA mutations, heart attacks and premature deaths.

WHO has designated particulates a Group 1 carcinogen. In 2013, a study involving 312,944 people in nine European countries revealed that there was no safe level of particulates and that for every increase of 10 μg/m3 in PM10, the lung cancer rate rose 22%. The smaller PM2.5 were particularly deadly, with a 36% increase in lung cancer per 10 μg/m3 as it can penetrate deeper into the lungs. (source wikipedia.org).

PM is the term for a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets found in the air. Some particles, such as dust, dirt, soot, or smoke, are large or dark enough to be seen with the naked eye. Others are so small they can only be detected using an electron microscope. These particles come in many sizes and shapes and can be made up of hundreds of different chemicals. Some particles, known as primary particles are emitted directly from a source, such as construction sites, unpaved roads, fields, smokestacks or fires. Others form in complicated reactions in the atmosphere of chemicals such as Sulfur dioxides and Nitrogen oxides that are emitted from power plants, industries and automobiles. These particles, known as secondary particles, make up most of the fine particle pollution in the country.
